前言:UMPC(Ultra Mobile PC)在市面上已經出現有相當久的時間了,就如許多新產品類型一樣,推廣初期總是會遇到許多形形色色的困難,不論是難以控制的功耗問題、效能無法有效突破、外型依舊龐大、價格過於高昂等等,在處理器製程技術逐步進展的現在,開始有了根本上的改變。

未達預期的UMPC初代產品

以微軟的 Origami規划來看該公司期望UMPC終端產品能達到500美元的價格區間,配備7吋的液晶螢幕,其迷你的體型,加上完備的無線網路功能,可以切合商務人士的應用,甚至作為高階玩家的隨身影音上網玩具。然而先就售價問題來看,初期採用的處理器及相關元件成本偏高,導致最終售價非常的不合理,與原先所規劃的價格區間有極大的差異。其次,由於當時製程技術的限制,UMPC所採用的X86處理器普遍功耗都過高,導致UMPC產品無法得到足夠的連續使用時間,無法符合商務人士的需求,甚至連高階玩家也不屑一顧,初始銷售狀況之慘澹,只有當初的TabletPC略可比擬。

UMPC-威盛磨刀霍霍UMPC市場

台灣x86處理器廠商威盛(VIA)表示對超級行動電腦(UMPC, Ultra-Mobile PC)市場興趣濃厚。

威盛今(19)日召開記者會,正式宣佈推出適用於UMPC此類輕薄型手持裝置的處理器VIA C7-M ULV。為了與英特爾和微軟的UMPC一較高下,威盛另創「UMD(Ultra-Mobile Device)」一詞。表示比起前者仍然定位在迷你筆記型電腦。威盛的UMD是將通訊、家電和PC融為一體。

UMPC-拿到三星訂單 威盛再戰英特爾《理財周刊》

手中拿著採用威盛晶片的超級行動電腦(UMPC),威盛總經理陳文琦又要再度挑戰半導體霸主英特爾。消息一出,讓威盛的股價連漲了幾天,再度成為市場焦點。

由於超級行動電腦,是微軟與英特爾兩大巨擘,針對可攜式產品所設計的最新力作,在今年的英特爾科技論壇之中,已經有包括三星、華碩等業者,推出UMPC的第一代產品。

不過,以目前英特爾所供應給廠商的晶片,設計出的UMPC價格仍高於7百美元(約新台幣2萬元),與大力加碼投入的韓國三星與微軟,所期望的5百美元甚至更低的價位相去甚遠,遂讓威盛逮到了機會,把過去研究開發低價筆記型電腦團隊所開發出來的晶片,用來搶攻這塊新市場。

「一切都是無心插柳,柳成蔭。」陳文琦形容。由於又要再度與英特爾對陣,陳文琦也不忘跟對手喊話。他認為,英特爾是個可敬的對手,但只有威盛與英特爾一起投入,才能讓UMPC市場將更快速成長。但他有信心的說,「威盛會做得比英特爾好」。

其實,陳文琦這次會如此有信心,除已經拿下三星這個大客戶之外,還有一個關鍵就是子公司宏達電,畢竟宏達電擁有不少國際級的電信客戶,加上黑莓機的盛行,使得擁有多功能又迷你的UMPC,很可能成為智慧型手機之後的下一個新寵。

只不過,過去微軟與英特爾推動平板電腦的失敗經驗,已讓不少電腦大廠望之卻步,威盛能否藉UMPC翻身,恐怕除英特爾外,還要看消費者賞不賞臉了。

台灣製造商廣達(Quanta)電腦今(31)日表示,專為開發中國家孩童設計的OLPC將在10月正式量產。

廣達今日召開第二季法說會,在會前的記者會上,廣達副董事長暨總經理梁次震表示,儘管面對部分零組件缺貨問題,但是由於供應商和OLPC團隊先前已經簽訂合約,因此OLPC確定會在第四季正式出貨。面對另一低價電腦陣營–由英特爾領軍的Classmate PC計畫成員華碩(Asus)的低價電腦Eee PC即將面市,梁次震強調,OLPC鎖定的是開發中國家學童,和Eee PC在價格和規格上都偏向已開發國家市場相比定位大不相同,「OLPC接受度不會受到Eee PC的影響,」梁次震說。
